What's Skipping Maintenance Actually Costing You?

Neglected systems drift down in efficiency as coils foul and parts wear, roughly a few percent a year. Slide in how long it's been since a professional tune-up and your rough annual heating-and-cooling spend to see the drift and what it may be adding to your bill.

Several years of buildup and wear are meaningfully raising your running cost and the odds of a breakdown. At $2,500 a year, that's roughly $300 in extra energy annually, plus a higher risk of a peak-season breakdown.

An estimate to illustrate the trend, not a measurement. A tune-up recovers much of this drift, and a plan keeps it from coming back.

● Why a Plan Pays Off

Four Ways Maintenance Beats Waiting

A maintenance plan is one of the few HVAC decisions that reliably saves more than it costs.

Lower energy bills

Clean coils and correct charge keep the system running near its rated efficiency.

Fewer breakdowns

Small problems get caught in spring and fall, not on the hottest or coldest day.

Longer equipment life

Less wear and strain means more years before you're facing a replacement.

Warranty protection

Documented annual service keeps manufacturer warranties valid when you need them.

● Common Questions

Preventative Maintenance FAQ

What's included, cost, frequency, and what happens if you skip it.

What does HVAC preventative maintenance include?
A thorough preventative maintenance visit covers cleaning or replacing filters, cleaning the coils, checking refrigerant charge and airflow, inspecting and tightening electrical connections, testing the thermostat and safety controls, lubricating moving parts, clearing the condensate drain, and, on heating equipment, inspecting the heat exchanger and combustion. On our plans it’s done each season, cooling in spring and heating in fall, so the system is ready before you need it.
Is HVAC preventative maintenance worth it?
For almost every system, yes. Regular maintenance keeps efficiency up so you pay less to run it, catches small problems before they become expensive breakdowns, extends equipment life, and is often required to keep the manufacturer’s warranty valid. In Sacramento’s demanding summers, a maintained system is far less likely to fail on the hottest day. The plan cost is usually a fraction of one avoided repair.
How much does an HVAC preventative maintenance contract cost?
Residential maintenance agreements are modestly priced for the value they return, and the exact cost depends on the number of systems and whether it’s a home or a commercial building. Plans typically bundle one or two seasonal visits plus member perks like priority scheduling and repair discounts. We’ll quote a plan sized to your equipment, and it usually pays for itself in energy savings and avoided repairs.
What is the difference between preventative maintenance and a tune-up?
A tune-up is a single service visit, while preventative maintenance is the ongoing program that schedules those visits on a regular seasonal basis, usually under an agreement with added benefits. Think of the tune-up as the appointment and preventative maintenance as the plan that makes sure it actually happens every season, plus priority service and discounts between visits.
How often should preventative maintenance be done on an HVAC system?
The standard is twice a year, a cooling tune-up in spring and a heating tune-up in fall, so each side of the system is checked before its season of heavy use. A heat pump, which runs year-round, especially benefits from two visits. At minimum, service any system at least once a year, and check filters yourself every one to three months.
What happens if you skip preventative maintenance?
Skipping maintenance lets dirt and wear build up, so the system gradually loses efficiency and your energy bills climb, small issues go uncaught and turn into larger breakdowns, and the equipment’s life shortens. It can also void the manufacturer’s warranty, since many require documented annual service. The result is usually higher running costs and a greater chance of an inconvenient, expensive failure.
